Michael Kutzner is a contemporary classical artist. Many of his paintings cross the mind like dark thoughts. Throughout his variations of steamrollers, tar machines, asphalt cookers, shunting engines and armoured gun carriers, crucifixes and black/ red-tainted urban landscapes, this tristesse never subsides, although his painting, whose roots lie in East Berlin, has gained in nuances over the years.
Each pictorial soundscape is invested with wide emotional spectrums and remembrances, broadening into sentiment and depth.
The paint is often applied in thick layers, with bulging reliefs, bubbles of glue shaped by flowing motions seemingly asking to be explored with one’s fingertips. Kutzner’s paintings are frequently reworked and overpainted, they become heavier over the years.

At Zionskirche Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien is now presenting an extensive view of Kutzner’s works from the period between 2011 and 2015.

Michael Kutzner *1955 in Berlin, lives and works in Berlin as a painter and graphic artist.
