At Künstlerhaus Bethanien, approximately 730 square meter (7,850 square feet) of exhibition space await discovery—housed in the historic “Lichtfabrik” in the heart of Kreuzberg. Shaped by the building’s rich history yet offering all the flexibility of a contemporary white cube, the spaces provide an inspiring setting for contemporary art and interdisciplinary projects.
With generous ceiling heights, white walls, durable industrial flooring, and a professional lighting system, the galleries offer ideal conditions for a wide variety of artistic practices. A freight elevator connects the floors, making the transport of artworks and installations easy and efficient.
The ground-floor galleries feature large storefront windows opening onto the vibrant Kottbusser Straße and are fully accessible. A second, light-filled gallery space is located on the first floor. Thanks to their flexible architecture, the spaces easily adapt to a broad range of exhibition formats—from solo and group shows to large-scale installations and performative projects.

The library at Künstlerhaus Bethanien is a special place for collection, research, and reflection. It holds over 5,000 books – from exhibition catalogs and artist publications to theoretical writings on contemporary art. The collection has grown steadily over decades through an international exchange of publications with museums, art associations, and cultural institutions. A digital register allows targeted searches by title, author, artist, or topic.
The library is open not only to our resident artists but also welcomes anyone interested in art and its discourses. It invites browsing, discovery, rediscovery – and meaningful encounters.
As a multifunctional event space, the library is also equipped with sound and video technology and can accommodate up to 50 people (seated). It’s well-suited for workshops, presentations, readings, or discursive formats. Whether as a quiet space for research or a vibrant venue for exchange, the library is an integral part of artistic life at Bethanien.
Künstlerhaus Bethanien has a spacious workshop in the basement that offers space for a wide variety of artistic and craft work. The focus is on woodworking in all its facets. With plenty of space for sculptural projects and larger productions, the workshop is a central location for the realization of practical ideas. Temporary storage of work and materials is also possible. A freight elevator ensures uncomplicated transport between the workshop, studios and exhibition rooms.
After an individual introduction by our technical team, the spaces can be used independently during regular opening hours. In addition to their practical functionality, they offer a supportive environment for exchange, collaboration, and mutual assistance.
