Beronica Gonzales explores her sense of self in her work. She uses found materials – such as clothing passed down from her family or used bed linens – which carry a personal history and reveal both the memories of previous owners and the changes the object has undergone over the years. Through the reproduction of these personal objects, she creates something like monuments to the everyday, reflecting both the process of change and her deep emotional connections to these things.
In her works, such as quilts, she enhances this sense of connection and comfort through the forms and careful material choices. In the US-American context, quilts have a long history as a form of storytelling and resistance. They tell stories of family histories, struggles, hope, fleeting moments, and collective experiences. For the artist, quilts are not only a symbol of home but also a form of storytelling that weaves personal history and collective experiences in a subtle and powerful way.
In her practice, Beronica Gonzales translates central themes and subjective sensations into various media, recontextualizing them in material combinations and creative methods, allowing for a sensitive exploration of the erosion of time and emotional connections to objects.
