Ezra Šimek interdisciplinary practice unfolds across film, performance, installation, sound, and text. Their work is grounded in an ongoing exploration of how stories are constructed, remembered, and transformed, moving fluidly between mediums to create immersive, layered experiences. Through these shifting forms, Ezra Šimek constructs speculative worlds and alternative archives – spaces where marginalized histories are not only preserved but actively reimagined, reactivated, and made livable in the present.
Drawing on pop culture, as well as queer and trans experience, the artist approaches storytelling as both a method and a form of resistance. Their practice is deeply invested in the power of narrative to challenge dominant histories and to open up new temporalities and possibilities. By weaving together elements of speculative fiction, personal memory, and genre conventions, they create works that blur boundaries between fact and fiction, documentation and invention.
In 2026, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and the International Centre for Contemporary Art MeetFactory in Prague initiate a new residency exchange programme for the first time, supported by German-Czech Future Fund. Its commitment to cross-cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration enables an ongoing exchange between artists working in Germany and the Czech Republic.
Künstlerhaus Bethanien nominated Finja Sander to take part in the residency at MeetFactory, where she will develop her work within the context of the exchange program.
