Biljana Popovic

My work explores the relationships between architecture, gender and performance. Since 2012 I have been working in both fine art and design contexts to produce critical spatial projects that expand our understandings of the built environment, often working from the margins of identity. In the past this has involved focusing on latent histories inscribed in designed objects, and asking questions about the role of decorative arts in relation to political power. Semi-fictional feminine heroines are a recurrent symbolic reference in my work. They are acolytes – they assist us when rewriting design history from an overlooked feminist perspective. Currently I am interested in working with interior architectural environments that are marked by their relationship to marginal identities.
