My installations are created through a process I call “thinking through building”, in which the act of construction is akin to a process of drawing or sketching ideas as they come to mind. The intention behind adopting this methodology is to avoid a linear process – from a preconceived plan through to the finished work – that characterizes conventional building and many art practices. The traditional blueprint associated with construction cannot exist in my projects as I focus on the act of production, conception and execution at the same moment. The outcome is a structure or set of structures that address the power relations implicit in constructed environments by inviting viewers to enter, walk through, under and behind, or climb on and over the work.
