I-Hsuen Chen

I-Hsuen Chen is an artist whose practice is firmly rooted in an attentive engagement with personal experience and lived reality. I-Hsuen Chen’s early works began with photography as a means of exploring his own life story, using the camera as both a reflective and investigative tool. From this intimate starting point, I-Hsuen Chen gradually expanded his focus to the life situations, relationships and social dynamics of larger groups and communities. As his interests evolved, so did his methods. Photography remains central to I-Hsuen Chen’s work, but functions as a flexible foundation rather than a fixed medium. Over time, I-Hsuen Chen has integrated video, publications, performance and exhibition formats into his practice, continuously questioning and expanding the definition and spatial, temporal and narrative dimensions of photography. In addition to his artistic practice, I-Hsuen Chen is also an accomplished video director specializing in the production of commercials and documentaries for theater and performing arts companies, further shaping his sensibility for narrative and collaboration.
