Imagine a tropical island, 2022–2023

Sera Yu Wen Chen (born 1991, Taiwan), works mainly with video, photography and installations. In her work, she focuses on urban observations and cultural identification and examines the invisible and unstable relationship between people and their environment. By interweaving non-linear narratives and different media, she explores the heterogeneity of the narrative system between fiction and non-fiction. She attempts to construct a possible perceptual space and a dialectical field beyond mere visual perception.
In recent years, Chen’s work has continued to explore how cultural and historical memories influence the construction of individual identity. It explores the marginalized voices of dispersed groups or individuals that have been erased from the mainstream narrative in various postcolonial contexts. Furthermore, it attempts to intervene in epistemological narrative systems from a non-human perspective in order to dissolve the rigid cultural interfaces characterized by official languages and structures.
