Setting Apart

Dafni Barbageorgopoulou (*1977 in Johannesburg, lives and works in Berlin) studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and the Royal College of Art in London.

Her show in the glass case located in front of Tiergarten townhall presents a site-specific work: The reduced wooden structure with its sharp edges invites associations to constructivism while also resembling various everyday objects like paper planes, a tent-like architecture or a crystal.
This segmented object, well-balanced yet fragile, takes up motifs and formal elements from the artist’s previous work. Earlier sculptures relied on a number of different sign systems and patterns from various cultural origins – in a similar vein, the current work eludes a definitive meaning. At nightfall, as soon as the glass case is lit up, the piece’s luminescence obliterates the lines between the interior and exterior.

The project was initiated by Andreas Prinzing.
