Dr. Sample is actually the documentation of a casting competition, which analyses the phenomenon of casting shows in the entertainment media in an enigmatic way. For his video installation, the Hungarian artist Tamás Komoróczky invited thirty people to supposedly compete for parts in a financial advertising spot. All the participants had to play the same roles and perform the same actions, which were laid down in the script. The video recording is an impressive document of all the participants’ need for self-portrayal, but it also permits the audience to witness the way they overcame their inhibitions. Komoróczky supplements his installation with other experimental video works, including a real-time video-mix based on a concert by the group “Gitarre und Schrank”, which was recorded before the beginning of the exhibition. Creativity and improvisation are therefore examined in a range of ways. At the same time, the works offer an ironic interpretation of the medium employed in each case – and pay homage to the sense of absurdity we all need for survival.
