In her films Bodil Furu makes use of the language of documentary realism, linking timeless human questions with current themes such as globalization, destruction of the environment, and the mediation of reality. Furu is primarily concerned with “psychosocial aspects”, the individual’s personal experiences in face of far-reaching environmental and social problems.
\nThe exhibition in K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien encompasses several films shown as separate projections, which document Furu’s thematic emphases: in Misty Clouds<\/em> (2011) she portrays people in the Chinese province of Shanxi, one of the regions in China \u2013 if not in the world \u2013 most polluted as a result of massive coal mining.
\nCode Minier<\/em> (2013) deals with copper mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the law of the same name was passed there, in 2002, to open the way for investments, but also to protect the local population from exploitation. Furu’s film gives a voice to meanwhile successful entrepreneurs but also to the losers, those people confronted by displacement, poverty and environmental pollution.
\nFuru’s films are enlivened by individual interviews with people, interwoven with shots of landscapes or apparently dramatically staged scenes, in which poems are recited, tradional music is played, and ancient legends are recounted \u2013 as in Furu’s latest film set in rural Norway, Landscapes by the book<\/em> (2015), which is being shown for the first time in K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien.<\/p>\n

Bodil Furu is currently receiving a grant from the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA).<\/p>\n
