Daniel Young and Christian Giroux have been working together since 2002. They produce sculptures, art in public space and film installations, in which they investigate the relations between architecture and sculpture. Young & Giroux adapt and question modernist forms by applying methods and construction systems from the industrial manufacture of consumer goods, prototypes or machine components. Their works, which make reference to phenomenology and conceptualism, combine an interest in architectural theory, post-war modernism and the evolution of our constructed environment.<\/p>\n
For their new sculpture Groundcurve <\/em>(2012) Young & Giroux were distracted into a deeper investigation by the curving facade of Toronto\u2019s new city hall. In Groundcurve <\/em>they use \u00a0materials such as glass, stainless steel and steel to construct delicate miniature facade elements, which surround two curving volumes. These are interwoven, inseparably, with the steel frame of an oversized, industrial system of storage shelves. The glazed building components are left open at the top and bottom, so enabling the viewer to look right through to the construction. The sculpture points to two different, yet connected processes of urban change: the development of business districts in the centres of North American cities and the simultaneous emergence of large-scale, remote logistics sites. By investigating the development of their constructed environment, Young & Giroux initiate a dialogue about the form of today\u2019s society. It is their intention to facilitate a shared, collective experience of objects within our landscape and to find a formal language comprehensible to us all.<\/p>\n Daniel Young lives in Toronto and Berlin.
