“Matthias” BAADER Holst (1962 – 1990) was one of the GDR’s most interesting underground poets. He worked as a poet, draftsman, filmmaker, publisher and performer. Ultimately, and in retrospect, he was probably the GDR’s only true Punk-Dadaist. His influence on writers, musicians and artists from the former GDR has been a lasting one to date. Unfortunately, his work failed to become sufficiently widely known because of his tragic early death, but its complexity and focus means it has lost none of its power and significance. An exhibition summing up every aspect of his oeuvre is both a rediscovery and a fresh presentation, therefore. It also permits insights into a different, unfamiliar culture in the GDR.<\/p>\n
The first successful exhibition about BAADER’s work took place in the Municipal Museum Halle in 2010, giving a first impression of his extensive creative oeuvre. In February 2011 the exhibition was continued in the context of a Dada festival at the Rote Fabrik in Zurich. It will now be possible to see it in K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin during September 2011 – it will show photos, films, interviews and sound works with and about the artist. Books, editions, archive items, manuscripts and notes also offer an insight into BAADER’s life and work. The aim of the exhibition is to show BAADER within the strategy of his oeuvre and so make his art accessible, tangible and re-applicable today.<\/p>\n
